FOOTBALL: Wages still on hold - NST

Jan 9, 2009 P. CHANDRA SAGARAN

FORMER Perak players and coach Steve Darby have been asked to wait as the Perak FA (PFA) wants to fulfil its immediate responsibilities first — paying the wages of this season’s players.

PFA owes about RM600,000 — with Darby alone claiming RM120,000 — to last season’s squad but president Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said yesterday the immediate concern is taking care of this season’s squad.

“At the moment, we can only take care of the present squad and the former players who have not been paid for five to six months will have to to wait,” said Mohammad Nizar, who is also the Perak Menteri Besar, after accepting a jersey sponsorship for the squad yesterday.

“We will only be able to pay them when our financial standing improves.”

PFA’s financial woes resulted in a player exodus at the end of last season while Darby is now with the Thailand FA. as only one player renewed his contract this season.

Since Mohammad Nizar assumed the presidency, the state Government has allocated about RM1 million to PFA.
