Red Giants hit three goals past Negri in top of table clash - Star

SHAH ALAM: Selangor kept up their sizzling form in the Super League and chalked up their third straight win convincingly, bringing down high-riding Negri Sembilan 3-0 in a top-of-the-table clash at the Shah Alam Stadium last night.

The Red Giants gave yet another strong display to race to 2-0 lead at half-time with goals by Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal and R. Surendran in the 21st and 27th minutes respectively. Skipper Mohd Amri Yahyah added the third goal in the 74th minute.

My ball: Negri Sembilan defender Mohd Aidil Zafuan tackling Selangor striker R. Surendran during their match at the Shah Alam Stadium yesterday.

Selangor, who are now under the charge of K. Devan, had in their previous matches beaten treble winners Kedah (4-1) to claim the Charity Shield in Alor Star last week and Perak (3-1) at home last Tuesday.

The 25,000 Selangor fans had much to shout about with their team getting off to an explosive start to trouble the visitors.

Negri, who had kept a clean slate in their opening two matches, defeating Penang and Kedah by identical 3-0 margins, had difficulty coping with the fleet-footed Selangor onslaught, led by national striker Mohd Safee Sali, Surendran and Mohd Amirulhaid.

It was not long before Negri goalkeeper Mohd Farizal Harun was beaten when Mohd Amirulhadi had the easiest of task to tap the ball into goal after Safee had put him through in the 21st minute. Then, Surendran whipped in the second goal in similar fashion in the 27th minute after he was put through by Safee inside the box.

The Deer managed to get a hold of themselves and began to threaten Selangor but forwards Mohd Zaquan Adhan Abdul Razak and Mohd Firdaus Azizul could not breach their opponents’ tight defence, marshalled by former Negri player Khairul Anuar Bahrum.

It was evident that Negri clearly missed seasoned campaigner Mohd Shukor Adan in midfield.

Safee could have inflicted more pain on the Deer but for squandering several sitters.

At the City Stadium in Penang, V. Jeganathan was the toast for the home team — scoring the solitary goal of the match against Perlis in the 29th minute.

In Ipoh, Perak also scored a 1-0 win over winless Police with Razali Umar Kandasamy on target in the 16th minute.
